A day’s trip to Mahableshwar in monsoon can be described by Beautiful weather, In the cloud, Misty, Cold, Light Rain, Grilled Corn, Hot tea(s) and by these images -:)
This can be a day trip from Pune but best if you can make it overnight.
Narsobawadi (Wadi) is located in Kolhapur district on the banks of river Krishna. Narsobawadi gets its name from the presence of ‘Shri Narasimha Saraswati‘, the Purna Avatar of Lord Dattatreya. With a lot of archaeological value this became a major pilgrim spot for many Shri Dattatrey devotee.
It takes about 5 hours to reach Wadi from Pune. You will have to take the route Pune->Satara->Karad->Sangali->Wadi. The temple is very old and as it is located on the banks of Krishna river, you get a great view. In monsoon, the temple submerges into the river but the administration office of the temple, shifts the paduka of “Shri Narshima Saraswati” to a safe place. After visiting the temple, we had a nice lunch at “Soman Uphar Graha”. It is very small place but the food is quite delicious.
After Wadi, we went to Kolhapur. Prior to India’s Independence, Kolhapur was a nineteen gun salute princely state ruled by the Bhosale Chhatrapati (Bhosale royal clan) of the Maratha Empire. The Mahalaxmi temple belongs architecturally to the Chalukya empire and was first built in the 7th century. Mounted on a stone platform, the image of the four armed and crowned goddess is made of gemstone and weighs about 40 kilograms. The image of Shri Mahalakshmi carved in black stone is 3 feet in height. The temple is really beautiful and you can see carving which are very very old. ( around 1300 years).
Tung is located around 30 Kms from Lonavala. From Pune-Mumbai expressway, you need to take Lonavala exit and continue towards the Amby Valley. Just before the Amby Valley, take a left turn to reach Tung Village. Tung village is very small but its location is excellent as Tung fort, Pavana water lake are very close and you can view some other forts like Lohgad & Visapur. Tung fort was built in 1600 CE by Adil Shah but later captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
We stayed in Club Mahindra resort at Tung. The resort is beautiful with huge area. It has 2-3 swimming pools with one infinity pool, from which you can directly view Pavana lake below.
You can do small treks from the resort. They have excellent facilities for various sports, Spa, etc. If you are interested in bird watching, you can see some beautiful birds like Sunbird, Magpie-robin, Bulbul, Shirke, etc. We did a small trek from resort to Pavana lake. The trek can be done in 2 hours but it is very steep. The best part of the trip was Moonlight dinner with a spectacular view of Pavan lake.

You can hire a boat here to take near Falmingos and a lot of other water birds.

This is the yearly trip with some my friends. Every year it is boys only, but this year, we accommodated our better halves as well.
We started at 8 AM and had a breakfast at Hotel Abhiruchi near “Mahabaleshwar Phata”. After breakfast, we directly reached our destination in Panchgani – Samyak Bunglow in Nandanvan Society. This bungalow society is full of trees. As soon as we entered the society, we felt at peace & relaxed while listening to the bird sounds & enjoying the chorus.
After enjoying the delicious lunch prepared by the caretaker of the Bungalow, Mr. Raju ( contact Number : 9552800982) and his wife, we went to “Old Mahabaleshwar” where one can see the the 4500-year old Panchaganga temple, which is built at the origin of 7 rivers – Krishna, Koyana, Gayatri, Savitri, Venna, Saraswati and Bhagirathi.
Near to “Old Mahabaleshwr” lies one of the best place of Mahabaleshwar – Arther Seat. It is really at the edge and top of Sanhyadri overlooking deep valley and rocks. It reminded me of the Grand Cannyon. This point is named Arthur Malet who lost his wife and a month old daughter in a tragic ferry accident in Savitri River. Arthur used to sit here and stare at the river.

We went to see Tapola on Sunday morning. The place is called “Mini Kashmir”. It is about 30 Kms from Mahabaleshwar. Tapola is located on the backwater of Koyna dam- Shivsagar Lake.
We rented a water boat and had a great ride for about an hour. We could see the village – Bamnoli- from boat. The government boat ferries cars from Tapola to Bamnoli. One can reach reach Satara in an hour from Bamnoli.
We, me and wife, along with a few family friends, go for Taljai Tekdi for 5-6 Kms morning trail on every Saturday. It is accessible available from Sahakar nagar or Sinhagad Road. It is really unbelievable that it is right in the city !! The trail is very beautiful in monsoon and winter. You can easily spot peacock on the trail. After the trail, do not miss Tea with lemon grass & Ginger just near Taljai temple.
People staying in Pune are lucky to be surrounded by beautiful tekdis, forts, water bodies and dams !!
Bhuleshwar temple is about 785 year old !! Its a miracle to see the temple in comparatively good conditions weathering all the history of Yadavs, Moguls, Adilshahi and British. The Temple was built during the period of 1230 AD during Yadav Rulers. There are classical carvings on the walls. It has been declared as a protected monument. As you can see from the picture below, they have applied protective color for the protection of dome. I am not happy about this as it destroys the originality.
Bhuleshwar is about 55 kms from Pune via Pune-Solapur highway. The approximate travel time each way is about 1 to 1.5 Hrs depending on traffic. We started at 10 and were back home by 3:30 PM. The road condition is good upto Yavat. The road from Yavat to Bhleshwar ( 8-9 Kms) is not that great.
There are a number of restaurants and dhabas on Pune-Solapur road for food. We had lunch at Kanchan. The restaurant is good, clean and prices are also reasonable.
